Genus information
Scirtothrips Shull, 1909: 222. Type species Scirtothrips ruthveni Shull, 1909, by monotypy.
Sericothripoides Bagnall, 1929: 69. Type species Dendrothrips bispinosus Bagnall 1924, by monotypy.
Labiothrips Bhatti & Mound, 1994: 162. Type species Labiothrips tenor Bhatti & Mound, 1994, by monotypy. Synonymised by Hoddle & Mound, 2003: 7.
Biology and Distribution
The leaf-feeding species of this genus are found worldwide. Several are pests of various crops (Mound & Palmer, 1981), although the widespread pest, Scirtothrips dorsalis, remains a taxonomic problem (Mound & Stiller, 2011). Moreover, the validity of many of the species described from Mexico (Johansen & Mojica-Guzman, 1999) is in doubt (Mound & zur Strassen, 2001; Hoddle et al, 2008).
