The living species in this group were, for some years, placed in the family Adiheterothripidae (Mound et al., 1980). Two of the three genera with living species occur only in western North America, but the third is found from the Mediterranean region to India (Hoddle et al., 2012).

Bhatti (2006) placed the Adiheterothripidae in synonymy with the Stenurothripidae, a family that is based on fossils (together with Opadothripidae Bagnall, 1927, and Neocomothripidae zur Strassen, 1973). The Stenurothripidae now includes three genera of extant species, together with seven genera of species known only from fossils.
