The four extant genera recognised in this family are all from the New World, mainly the Neotropics, with all but three species breeding in flowers - the three in ''Aulacothrips'' are all ectoparasites on various Homoptera. If the fossil species listed are correctly associated, then the family must had had a wider distribution at one time.

Heterothripidae

The four extant genera recognised in this family are all from the New World, mainly the Neotropics, with all but three species breeding in flowers - the three in Aulacothrips are all ectoparasites on various Homoptera. If the fossil species listed are correctly associated, then the family must had had a wider distribution at one time.
